What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a therapeutic muscle-relaxing agent derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Originally used by ophthalmologists for treating blepharospasm, Botox has been utilized for years as a cosmetic treatment to correct visible signs of stress and aging.

What is a BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Like?

Botox Cosmetic is injected into specific muscles with a very fine needle, targeting the contractions that cause lines and wrinkles. The treatment takes approximately 10 minutes and involves minimal discomfort—a slight "pin prick." No anesthetic is required, and you can resume your regular activities immediately following the treatment.

Are There Any Possible Side Effects of BOTOX®?

Side effects of Botox Cosmetic are usually mild and temporary. The body may naturally produce antibodies against the proteins in botulinum toxin, which can reduce the therapy's effectiveness. Temporary bruising is sometimes experienced but typically resolves within 2 to 3 days. In rare cases, there may be slight drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of expression. If this occurs, please follow up with your medical aesthetician.

What Should I Tell My Provider About Medicines and Vitamins I Take?

Using Botox Cosmetic with certain medicines may cause serious side effects. Inform your provider about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines and supplements you take, including vitamins, herbal products, recent antibiotic injections, anticholinergics, muscle relaxants, allergy or cold medicine, sleep medicine, aspirin-like products, and blood thinners. Do not start any new medicines until you have told your provider that you have received Botox Cosmetic in the past.

What Should I Tell My Provider Before Treatment?

Let your provider know about any muscle or nerve conditions you have, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease), myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, as these may increase the risk of serious side effects. Inform your provider if you have or have had bleeding issues, plan to or have had surgery, have forehead muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, or any changes to your face. Additionally, notify your provider if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or plan to breastfeed, as it is not known if Botox Cosmetic can harm your unborn baby or pass into breast milk.

What Type of Results Will I See with BOTOX®?

Typically, the effects of Botox Cosmetic are visible within 3 days, with maximum benefits reached between 10 to 14 days. Once the muscle relaxes and the skin softens, you will have a more relaxed and youthful appearance.
